The included Octoware control software enables you to monitor complete system setup via IP access. The software makes it easy to scan all connected devices and display them easily through the graphical user interface. User profiles are simple to edit off-line. You can flash upgrade system components either device by device or with a single on-screen click for the complete system, so you can focus on your main tasks.

Octoware also monitors and stores the entire system s switching activities and logins, providing you with a great deal of security.

Security and monitoring.

LDAP integration enables seamless integration into standard network security setups. If the network link fails, the ServSwitch Octet is still protected by its own proprietary security settings that you can configure easily via the Octoware or the on-screen menu system.

What s more, you can configure the ServSwitch Octet to create SNMP traps to flag certain events. This adds more security to the systems and it improves reliability. Also you can control the ServSwitch Octet via SNMP! In mission-critical environments like process automation, an error or a defect in a machine generates an SNMP trap that goes to an SNMP management program like HPr OpenViewT. The SNMP management program can then automatically force a ServSwitch Octet User Station to switch to a dedicated server showing the alarms, so it counteracts the reported failure.

High resolution over great distances.

The ServSwitch Octet minimizes video signal degradation. This enables transmissions of higher screen resolutions at even longer distances over solid CAT5 UTP cable or higher.

With every switching activity, the ServSwitch Octet measures the transmitted KVM signals and equalizes them automatically for the best video performance-all without requiring any changes within the system s setup. Not only can you easily put consoles used for server management outside the server room, but you can also place servers outside the room, too. What s more, you can connect all these servers homogeneously end to end up to a distance of 984.2 feet (300 m).

The system in detail.

The switching system consists of the switching unit itself, a User Station, and Server Access Modules (SAMs). Connect all components by using CAT5 or higher cable.

Three User Stations provide access from your desk to the ServSwitch Octet, and they compensate automatically for CAT5, CAT5e, and CAT6 cable types and varying lengths. All add an additional RJ-45 port to connect a local computer using a SAM and work at distances up to 984.2 feet (300 m). The Basic User Station (KV1711A-R2) offers video resolutions up to 1024 x 768. The Enhanced-Video User Station (KV1712A-R2) adjusts for skew between RGB signals each time a switch is made to a server. It offers video resolutions up to 1280 x 1024. Use the USB User Station with Serial/Audio Support (KV1713A) with a PS/2r or USB keyboard and mouse. It offers video resolutions up to 1280 x 1024.

The SAMs, matchbox-size molded units with a pigtail cable attached, don t require rack space and draw their power from the attached server. This ensures keep-alive functionality, providing keyboard and mouse emulation to the server at any time, and they re independent of the switching system s status.

SAMs have unique ID addresses, too. As soon as a SAM is connected to the ServSwitch Octet switch, the SAM s address appears on the CPU channel list within the connected User Station s on-screen menu. From this menu, the SAM can be operated by an administrator. This plug-and-play simplicity reduces installation time tremendously.

Users can name a SAM s numeric ID through the User Station s on-screen menu. It s stored in the SAM s nonvolatile flash memory.

If you disconnect a SAM from the server and move it to a different location later, its name instantly disappears from the list. Once you plug it back into any of the switch s CPU ports, the SAM is recognized again by the system automatically without any additional reconfiguration. You can also connect a SAM right to a User Station to provide direct access to the server without interrupting the emulation.

The Dual RJ-45 SAMs add even more value to your ServSwitch Octet system. They act as 1 x 2 KVM splitters and enable two users to share access to one CPU. They also provide redundant system setup, eliminating single point-of-failure risks.

Additionally, they transfer stereo audio to the user station and mono audio back to the attached CPU. Plus, their RS-232 interface enables transparent serial transmission and switching up to 38.4 kbps.

The ServSwitch Octet best fits mission-critical environments, such as a TV broadcasting company, where "on-air" operation requires redundancy and flexibility. In this application, most of the company s content is no longer stored on tapes but on video or music file servers that are loaded with gigabytes of data. Because live broadcasting is very expensive, mere seconds of downtime during commercials cost any TV station lots of money! It provides operators with simultaneous access to servers and guarantees 24/7/365 operation.

What s included.

ServSwitch Octoware is the standalone administrative utility software supplied with each ServSwitch Octet unit. It enables you to assign names to attached servers and administer naming and access information for attached users. You can use Octoware to configure ServSwitch Octet installations remotely, eliminating the need to configure each unit separately on-site. In addition, the software supports the ability to monitor and report on all system and switching events and activities.
