    Black Box offers another first!
Leave it to Black Box to bring you the world's first USB ServSwitchT with a built-in peripheral sharer...actually, the first two! The ServSwitch USB and the ServSwitch USB Plus enable up to four CPUs to share one keyboard, monitor, and mouse-plus peripherals-via USB links!

    ServSwitch USB
The KV812A and KV814A support two or four CPUs, respectively. With either of these models, you can connect your CPUs to a variety of peripherals and a control station (keyboard, monitor, and mouse). The group of USB peripherals, together with the keyboard, monitor, and mouse signals, is collectively linked to a selected CPU. So you can send a file from a linked Dellr CPU to a USB printer, then switch the link and send a file from a Macr G3 or G4 CPU to the same printer-all from the same control station!

Use the front-panel push-button control to select the CPU you wish to access. A seven-segment LED shows a number that corresponds with each CPU, confirming your selection.

Both ServSwitch USB models also have autoscan, which can be selected by pressing the front-panel push button for five seconds. With this feature, you can display the video signals of attached CPUs sequentially for a predefined amount of time. View the applications running on the attached CPUs quickly and easily.

    ServSwitch USB Plus
In addition to the capabilities of the standard models, the KV822A and KV824A also feature two 6-pin mini DIN connectors for an optional PS/2r keyboard and mouse, as well as one DB15 "options" connector, which enables you to use the Remote Control Unit (KV6REM) as well as other optional equipment.

The ServSwitch USB Plus automatically converts data between PS/2 and USB formats for seamless data flow among your PS/2 keyboard and mouse and the attached USB peripherals. The Plus model enables hotkey and mouse switching between CPUs in addition to the push-button switching. And with the Plus model, you can place your controlling keyboard, monitor, and mouse up to 30 feet (9.1 m) from the ServSwitch USB. To take advantage of this extra distance, order the optional PS/2 Monitor/Keyboard/Mouse Extension Cable.

The optional Remote Control Unit also enables users to switch between connected computers without having access to a keyboard or to the switch itself. You can attach the unit to the side of a monitor or anywhere you like. It indicates the selected CPU on a similar type of seven-segment LED that's on the switches.

As long as my PC has USB ports, I can use the ServSwitch USB, right?
Well, maybe. Since USB has been ratified for several years now, computer manufacturers have been putting USB ports on the back of their machines as a way of being "future compatible." But it takes more than just a port on your machine for USB to operate properly.

Unfortunately, most computers shipped during the "early" years of USB (roughly pre-1998) probably do not have a BIOS that can recognize or configure itself for USB. Some popular operating systems aren't compatible either. For example, Windowsr 3.11 and the first release of Windows 95 do not have USB support. So to ensure your computer is truly USB capable, you need to check for the following:

    1) Your computer must have USB ports. (It's possible to add USB ports via an upgrade, but there are often inherent problems with these upgrades, including compatibility issues.)
    2) Your computer's BIOS must be able to support USB. Check with your computer's manufacturer to obtain the latest BIOS version that supports USB.
    3) Your operating system must also fully support USB. Windows 98 and Macr OS 8 and above currently support USB; Windows 2000 also provides extensive USB support. (For various reasons, we strongly advise against using Windows 95 with the ServSwitch USB line.) In addition, several other software companies have announced plans to incorporate USB support in their products in the near future, so the outlook is good.

As a general rule, all your CPUs should be fully operational with USB peripherals before they're used with the ServSwitch USB. If you need additional information, the official USB Web site is an excellent source. It offers several great tools to help you determine the USB-readiness of your system.
