What are KVM Switches?
A KVM switch is an apparatus that allows you to control multiple computers or servers from the same Keyboard, Video monitor, and Mouse. An example would be a server farm, where technicians only need to access each server sporadically, and from the same work station. The reverse is also true. A single computer can be controlled by more than one keyboard, monitor, and mouse. This typically only happens in computer home theaters and public kiosk machines.

An example of this would be when you go into certain retail outlets. They make you fill out your arrival information, via a terminal, to be queued in a line. The information is routed to the computer and displayed at the work station of employees and on digital signage around the store to let you know where you stand in the line.

Electronic KVM Switches

The first KVMs were simple mechanical devices. They consisted of a box with a selector knob that when turned would physically change the connections from one computer to another. These systems were not very reliable. Electronic KVM switches are much more reliable and have many more capabilities than their lower tech brothers.

They also allow a much greater number of computers to be attached. Where mechanical KVMs had a maximum of 12 computers per switch, Electronic KVMs can theoretically support an unlimited number of computers through daisy chaining KVMs.

They also, typically, are easier to switch between. Where before had to twist a knob and hope the computer hadn't rebooted since you used it last, now you can seamlessly switch between systems with a key stroke. Before you may have had to jiggle the knob to make sure the contacts were aligned correctly, now you can feel secure in your connections.

Peripheral Emulation

Peripheral emulation is where the switch sends signals to all of the computers it is attached to saying, "this computer has everything attached properly, so work normally."  This is essential if your system has a lot of computers hooked up to it, or if it reboots often. Our company offers a wide range of these KVM switches to meet your every need.
